Measure Twice, Cut Once

I took a sewing class last week to learn how to make an equilateral triangle pillow. I used to hate measuring, but now that I'm getting into quilting, I'm starting to enjoy it as simply part of the process. Anyway, at the class we cut around 60 triangles that were, incredibly, all the same size!

It takes so long to cut and piece everything, that we got to finish the pillow ourselves. I've done pillows, all kinds of pillows, so no big deal. Right? Right? Hahahah. You totally know where this is headed.

I cut everything quickly with my rotary cutter based on the dimensions provided from the instructor (and based on my pillow form). Then you hem up the seams and sew it to the back of the pillow. Boom. Done.

Except one was too short. By about 2 inches.

That old adage to measure twice and cut once really came into play here. Oy. I made do with what I had because I didn't have enough fabric to recut the piece. Once it was all pieced together, it didn't look too bad, just an extra seam.

Here's the pillow in its glory on the guest bed. Thoughts?

Head, Thorax, Abdomen...

You haven't lived until you've heard a bus full of little kids singing the Insect Song en route to their  nature day field trip. "Head, thorax, abdomen, abdomen... Six legs, antenna, and don't forget the compound eyes... "

We ventured to the Aldo Nature Center with Daredevil's preschool today. It was a perfect day for our field trip. It was sunny and warm, but not too hot. Daredevil didn't love all of the waiting, but he sure loved all the activities and being outside!

We hiked to the pond where we got to scoop out critters from the pond. Daredevil found a beetle, a dragonfly nymph and a teeny tiny crawdad!

After our time at the pond, we watched a puppet show about insects and how some completely transform (like a butterfly) and some only change a little bit (like grasshoppers). It was just like we've seen in Gaspard and Lisa and Daredevil thought it was just about the neatest thing ever. He kept waving, pointing and laughing. He was sitting by Sawyer's mom and he kept standing up to get a better view. Puppet show = big hit.

Then we went on a nature hike where we saw cranes and birds. We also got to hear all sorts of frog calls. Daredevil loved helping our tour guide, Virginia, push the different frog call buttons. He wouldn't give Andy a turn so Jenna decided to distract him with a big hug while Andy made some frogs sing! It was actually really cute. Then they had a nature scavenger hunt. Daredevil found a big raccoon. He actually didn't like it so much. He kept wanting Andy's dragonfly.

After that we sat in the shade and enjoyed our yummy snack!

It was a fun day, but I think Daredevil's most favorite part was getting to ride on the big yellow school bus for the first time. He couldn't wait to get back on it to ride again!

Did you know that frogs can jump 10 times the length of their body? That's intense jumping right there.

Happy Memorial Day weekend!

Tubes

Daredevil got tubes the tail end of March. He's had one infection, but otherwise so far, so good.

He had his follow-up yesterday with his ENT surgeon and a hearing test with an audiologist.

Daredevil isn't so fond of the hearing test (dark room, small room, double doors, no way out, scary lady, weird sounds and lights, etc) because of his sensory issues, but the results were basically the same pre-tubes: hearing at the lowest range of normal. Lucky for us, we get to retest in 6 months.

As for his ears, they look great. His cute little blue plastic tubes are in place and open. In November, we will return to make sure everything is still in place.

While waiting, Daredevil colored some beautiful pictures for us.

And just for some laughs, I asked Daredevil if I looked ok this morning. He gave me a once over, cocked his head and said, "no." Hah. Children and their unbridled honesty.

This was me this morning. I was in my gym gear but I didn't think I looked too bad... Oy.

So here's what you missed....

It's been 10 whole weeks since an update from me... since it would be impossible to go back and detail all that has happened in our little corner of the world, I thought I'd show you the highlights.

Without any further adieu, here's what you missed...

I have a niece on the way.. we aren't expecting.. just so we're clear.

What about that personal space?

So, that's what you've missed. Questions, clarifications? Let me know!
